the pace is not too bad on the outer boulevard. -- outer loop. there is a crash reported on the eastbound lanes of route 50 near route 197 in bowie and one on southbound 301 coming south of central avenue near trade zone avenue. police were responding for that accident. the wet pavement slows everybody down this morning. keep that in mind. we have signal lights on flash downto 16th at harvard street and a crash reported on wisconsin avenue at western avenue. that initially reports that a cyclist has been struck. 270 south, just volume delays and stretches south in urbana and high hyattstown past 109 and the scales. an accident noh of triangle moved on to the left shoulder for early delays coming out of quantico to stafford to ma it into prince william county. andrea and mike, back to you. >> thank you, beverly. the ravens may have gotten a win last week thanks to a questionable call by the replacement refs but the refs are gone now. >> baltimore hosted the first game since the regular refs

decided to come back. ravens taking on the browns. a 63-year-old interception return by baltimore's carey williams is the play of the night. there he goes through the house. ravens beat the browns 23-16. >> the headline this morning is the return of the refs. kristin fisher is live in our satellite center with more on that. sounds like an action movie. >> reporter: it does. when was the last time that you saw referees tting a standing ovation? most time they're booed or heckled but not last night. check out the reception they received in baltimore just before kickoff. cheers and a standing ovation for the referees. that may be a first in the history of football. and people throughout the game held up signs. look at that one. "finally we get to yell at real refs. welcome back." these guys got the rock star treatment. this all happened less than 24

hours after an agreement was reached between the n.f.l. and the referees union after nearly a year of negotiations. the two sides finally reached a compromise on pensions, salaries. fans were ecstatic. coaches relieved. no one was happier about the return of the real refs plan the players. here's redskins lorenzo alexander and steven bowin. >> i say hallelujah. hallelujah. thank you lord we have the old refs back. >> you always say you don't miss something till you go without it. handling these replacement refs the last couple of weeks has kind of been difficult for us during that time. >> reporter: we all know even the real refs can be frustrating at times. how did they do their first game back? pretty good. there was one controversial pass interference call but other than that, a pluses all around. they're being credited with bringing credibility and a good flow back to the game. the fans couldn't be happier.

you better believe they were sounding off on twitter last night. i'll have all reaction from twitter during the game coming up half an hour at 6:30. >> the honeymoon is almost over. live in our satellite center this morning for that update. thank you. well, mortgage giant fannie mae says it will look into some foreclosure cases to see if anything can be done to reverse them. it's in response to a protest yesterday at both fannie mae and freddie mac. protesters want policy changes that would allow for a reduction in princies to the current market value of homes to top evictions and allow residents to buy back homes at the current market value. >> we did it willingly as veterans to serve our country. to come back home and have other people in this country try and take homes away from veterans, it's not going to happen [ inaudible ] well, starting today,

police can give you a breathalyzer test if they suspect you're driving drunk in the district. police stopped giving those tests two years ago in d.c. because of inaccurate equipment and it caused hundreds of tests and drunk driving convictions into question. the feds gave the city a dis $1 -- $150,000 grant to get the equipment in order so they could start giving the breathalyzer tests again and that starts today. we have a commuter alert now. another weekend, another mess on metro. starting tonight no service on the green line between branch avenue and southern avenue. it begins at 10:00 and goes through sunday night. shuttle buses will get you around where you need to go, but it will take an extra 40 minutes most likely to plan on that. another closure on the orange line. no service between vienna and east falls church. shuttle buses will be there as well. yes, again, another 40-minute delay. plan on that. expect delays on the red and yellow line, too, because they are single tracking in parts of those lines to get some repairs done. coming up on 6:06. jessica doyle is watching your

money and where you put your money. >> a list of the best banks in the area. >> that's right. i know it's not going to surprise you that six out of ten consumers say they're unhappy with their financial institution. we talk about a lot of the problems that are out there but there are hidden gems out there as well. a new list from "money" magazine names the best banks with perks like easy to avoid fees and good interest rates. the number one u.s. bank, the fourth biggest bank in the country. it is more than -- it has more than 3,000 branches in 25 states. it was voted tops for basic senior and student checking accounts. it has a relatively low direct deposit amounts to bypass the minimum balance requirement. it was also ranked number one for professionalism in another survey. in the number two spot, td bank. more than 1200 branches in 15 states. it offers great rewards if you keep a certain minimum in your account. customers pay no out of network atm fees or foreign transaction

fees on debits. another perk, branches are open late. looking at the next three, huntington bank is a mid-size regional bank with branches in west virginia. free checking accounts, a money market account that pays.65%. that's well above the average. number four is first citizens, another mid-size regional bank with more than 420 branches across the country, including our area. perks include free basic checking, low minimum balances for more souped up accounts and rounding out the top five, mid siez regional -- size regional bank m&t bank. it offers free checking, waives out of network atm fees for some. another option of course is credit unions. they have fabulous deals for consumers. it takes a little more guesswork. >> it's not as convenient. >> but a lot of them will let them use any atm and they refund you your out of network

mark. howard, the wet pavement is doing a number on the drive. there's been a crash in the intersection of western avenue at wisconsin avenue. a cyclist struck. police are on the scene to direct you in the intersection there. your next timesaver traffic at 6:18. mike, back to you. >> thank you, bev. 6:12 now. here's a check of some of the stories making news this morning. four people are dead after an office shooting in minneapolis. four others were wounded in this. this was on thursday at a sign shop. the gunman killed himself. police are not releasing a motive yet in the rampage. 28-year-old actor johnny lewis is dead. he's best known for his role on sons of anarchy. he fell to his death after allegedly beating to death his elderly land lady. he had been in a drug treatment program. face box is -- facebook is cracking down on face likes.

money. what simple things can i do right now to save on my energy bill? >> attics and crawl spaces and basements are good places to start looking for insulation. one thing i learned is the wall sockets leak air. our guys go in with infrared cameras and can show air flow. we have energy detectives, home medics who are doing kind after checkup on how you're doing in your home. they can point out where you need to support less air leakage or more air retained in the home. >> unplugging appliances or whatever that you're not using can also make a difference? >> that's right. don't leave them running and don't leave them on. the light bulbs we talked about, other kinds of appliances, washers, dryers. i had to replace my whole hvac home comfort system. $8,000 to $10,000. i wish i could win the ten grand. that would have paid for it. >> mike is not eligible but you are if you live in northern virginia. the website to go to if you

want to enter? >> leap-va.org. >> you've got to enter before october 1. let's check on the weekend weather. we have a little bit after muggy start. >> but the rain is pulling away. we have some fog. that will be an issue but the weekend, i'm feeling more optimistic about it. we have some patchy fog now that the showers have pretty much left the area. i know there's still some in anne arundel county and across the bay but we're starting to clear out so we'll call it partly cloudy with the showers ending. temps in the 60s this morning. our day planner shows a mix of clouds and sunshine. so partly sunny. mid-70s by noon. there could just be a stray shower in one or two spots but i think most of the shower or thunderstorm activity will hold off till late this afternoon and this evening with 78 by 4:00. by 8:00 we've got 74 degrees. watching some of those showers and storms up in new england. but look. the stuff we've been dealing with all night, there it is now pulling away from annapolis, crossing the bay bridge. queenstown north of chestertown you still have the rain there but the rest of us are drying

out. the problem is with the moisture from last night, the clear skies, light winds, behind it we've got the clearing. stafford a quarter mile visibility. all the areas west are seeing fog. we have a dense fog advisory issued till 10:00. look at this. fauquier county west to i-81 and the shenandoah valley. some of these visibilities are going to be near zero over the next couple of hours. temperatures out west also a little bit cooler. that's helping the fog to form. low 60s there. mid- to upper 60s just about everywhere else. here in d.c. we're looking at 67. outside on our michael & son weather camera, decent visibility with mostly cloudy skies, calm winds and high humidity. so our forecast, we are watching a front that's sagging south of us. today could see a shower or storm return late, 80 degrees. we're going to get some sunshine once we get rid of the fog. tonight 50s to maybe 60 in town, but a better day tomorrow. we'll be 72. i think any showers will be southern virginia, not near us. pop-up shower can't are ruled

out sunday, 74. monday looks good, too, 75 with showers likely by tuesday. let's check in with beverly farmer. she has timesaver traffic. busy out there on the wet pavement. outer loop of the beltway is slow gone into silver spring. there was the early morning crash just west of georgia avenue before connecticut moved on to the left shoulder. that's the good news. delays continue here from new hampshire avenue through the work zone and on toward georgia avenue. if you travel into northwest, chevy chase area, ongoing crash western avenue, wisconsin avenue. this involve add cyclist struck -- involved a cyclist struck. a lot of equipment on the scene. still some activity in the intersection to work around. connecticut avenue may be a better bet into northwest in the meantime. dealing with a crash in prince george's county on the stretch of livingston road just a little north of scataway road at taylor avenue. they've been clearing up a trash trade zone. eastbound 66 volume building in manassas in centreville inside the beltway. you see a little more volume typically at this time sliding out of the hov rules to head

in today's economy. too many of those who are working are living paycheck to paycheck trying to make falling incomes meet rising prices for food and gas. more americans are living in poverty than when president obama took office and fifteen million more are on food stamps. president obama and i both care about poor and middle-class families. the difference is my policies will make things better for them. we shouldn't measure compassion by how many people are on welfare. we should measure compassion by how many people are able to get off welfare and get a good paying job.

down by one. the braves are hosting the mets this weekend. the earliest the nats could win the division is tomorrow night. if they do, it will just be their second division title since 1981. >> wow. another bad sign for hockey fans. the nhl has officially canceled its entire pe season schedule. -- preseason schedule. the regular season is scheduled to begin october 11 but that's looking less likely. the league and players union will hold negotiations later today in new york. a big upset overnight in college football. unranked washington upset eighth ranked stanford. in the fourth quarter the huskies teamed up for the 35- year-old touchdown. it would be the game winner. washington wins 17-13. time 6:24. still ahead, the latest on pepco and its big union as they try to avoid a strike. >> metro will stay open late for nationals playoff games. learn which local company is making that possible. >> before you grab the keys, listen to beverly farmer with

happy friday. 6:29. this is the place where you can always get your weather first. thank you for starting your morning with us. good morning. i'm andrea roane. i'm mike hydeck. howard bernstein is on the weather terrace. he said some of the moisture is going to pull out. >> rains are pulling away. with breaks in the cloud cover, light winds and fog has formed especially southwest of d.c. sunrise 7:02 this morning. here's a look at day planner. you see some of the breaks in the cloud cover looking east this morning. we've got temperatures by lunch time in the mid-70s. maybe a stray shower then but likely to be late this afternoon, this evening when a few more showers and storms return with a high temperature around that 80-degree mark. fog a real problem out to the west now. manassas visibility a half mile. a quarter mile, excuse me. dulles and stafford a half mile. quarter in culpeper and petersburg a quarter there. were three and a half inches of rain reported in bealeton in fauquier county from weather watcher joe last night.

you right here at 7:00. >> norah, we'll be watching. the man behind an anti- islam movie is in jail this morning. nakoula basseley nakoula was arrested in california. he's accused of violating his probation after he was convicted of check fraud in 2010. he made the movie called "innocence of muslims" the movie which sparked deadly protests against the united states throughout the muslim world. he has been barred ers or the i five years unless it's okayed by his probation officer. has this ever happened? do you remember it ever happening since you've been watching football? we've been watching football a long time. when is the last time you saw or heard a standing ovation for referees at an n.f.l. game? >> no boos are usually the only thing you hear about referees and umpires getting but it happened last night. the regular refs came back and the crowd was ecstatic. >> they were also happy with

joe flacco. he he had a touchdown pass, ran one in himself. ravens topped the bengals 23- 16. >> all people want to talk about are the refs and kristin fisher is talking about that and the reaction in our newsroom. >> reporter: back when the replacement refs were making all the questionable calls, twitter actually became the place for fans and players to sound off. but last night just the opposite. twitter became the place where fans and players could celebrate the return of the real n.f.l. referees. let me show you what i'm talking about. here on the baltimore ravens official twitter account they wrote, baltimore welcomes refs back with open arms. on the n.f.l. 's official twitter account, they wrote safe to say league officials have never been more loved. it's a good time to be an n.f.l. referee. as mike and andrea said, they got a standing ovation, first time probably ever in football history. there were some folks who weren't too happy to see the

real refs back. one person wrote, darn, the good refs are back. i was looking for more intertouchdownceptions. another wrote, the first lusty boos from the real refs. and we're back. honey among is over. getting back to normal. i want to show you this twitter account. this is the tatter account for somebody who -- twitter account for somebody who was calling himself the n.f.l. replacer ref. but yesterday after news broke that a deal had been struck, he changed his name to former replacer ref. he's developed a following of over 8,000 followers. during the game he wrote, in a million years i would never have guessed that illegal formation is an actual football penalty. he was making jokes like that throughout the game. he developed even more followers throughout the game. but i'll leave you with this. he ended it with, thanks,

tweets, for a fun time. he's closing down the account now that the real refs are back. >> calm down, right. very good. thanks, kristin with that live update from our newsroom this morning. in other news, the man accused of beating a capitol hill man in a robbery admit they did it. now all three are being held in jail without bond. d.c. police say the men attacked thomas maslin six weeks ago. he had been to a nationals baseball game and went to a nearby bar. on his way home he was robbed of his phone, beaten and left for dead near eastern market. >> i think it's really a relief that they got him. >> a phone. a phone. a phone. it's just despicable. >> maslin is still in the hospital. he's not yet able to walk or feed himself and he's now blind in one eye. pepco and its main union will be back at the bargaining table this afternoon. wednesday the ibew local 1900

rejected what pepco called its final offer in these contract talks. it said no by a 5-1 margin. the union is upset with a plan to put part-time employees in pepco's call center and what the union calls a takeover of health care benefits. pepco rejects the health care claim. but if talks do breakdown, the union could authorize the first strike since 1985. it is 6:36. jessica is back with another your money report. a local business is stepping up to the plate when it comes to keeping met free running for the playoffs if the games run late. >> it talks about the love of d.c. which is its home base and it's putting its money where its mouth is. it will underwrite up to two hours. it will allow metro to provide after hour service during the playoffs. that will be sundays through thursdays when metro closes at midnight meaning riders won't be stranded if games go late.

welcome back to 9 news now. friday morning edition. it's 6:42. i'm beverly farmer in for monika samtani. it's 67 degrees. we're checking out the ride for you. if you make the trip into chevy chase, you might want to take connecticut avenue southbound. this is southbound wisconsin avenue blocked off near western avenue where a cyclist has been struck. we're told no life threatening injuries in this incident but police are on the scene to direct traffic. again connecticut avenue into chevy chase might be your better bet there. taking the ride out of clarksburg and germantown, southbound 270. out of frederick still heavy
